I am currently completing the annual staff appraisals for the Sergeants in my team. I have to do this quickly because F Division has an awful record for timely appraisals. An enormous pile of Ruralshire tax-payers money has just been converted to Japanese yen in the form of the new 4 x 4 police vehicles. I suspected that these gleaming status symbols were more suited to transporting Tarquin and Cressida to prep school than chasing Isac and Noah across the orchards in a stolen motor.

I went to a garden just to the west of Ruraltown. It was more of a field, surrounded by those huge hedges you can’t see or get through. The patrol seemed OK but they had that bewildered look.

For American and other overseas readers - England beat the ‘onion sellers’ to win the Rugby world cup semi-final in Paris by fourteen points to nine. Back in Blighty, the England football team also won their Euro 2008 qualification match at Wembley by three goals to nothing.
