“Police officer for 14 yrs. 6 years ago got a ‘failure’ police dog for my parents. ( Not aggressive enough……the dog, not my parents!) Jake, white GSD, huge, boneheaded, soft, aggressive when required. Guarded my baby boys when they were born with ferocity. He would sit and stare at them, or sleep. One eye open. Listening.
Last December a tumour was discovered and he had to be put down. I took my parents to the vet, not trusting them to make the journey home without ten tons of Jake bounding around the car. My parents were broken. My 77 yr old father, the strongest man I know, a wreck.
It gets easier, slowly, trust me. The ‘its only a dog’ brigade really do not know what they are missing out on.
Whichendbites…..you were his hero.
Someone told me that an Indian story tells that we all go to heaven, but when we get there, there is a bridge, and before we can cross we have to be judged by every animal we have encountered in our lives.
When your day comes, he will be at your bridge, and he will deem you more than fit to cross.”

i also have a best friend who also happens to be a dog. she has been my family/friend for the last 10 years and sometimes the only person i am happy talking to.
admittadly she might not be the greatest talker, but by god shes a great listener!
strangely enough she is the only thing keeping me in this country and this job at the moment as i dont think she would survive the trip to the land of oz…but i would rather be here with her than there without her.
I recall that years ago, my other half bought a mug or something inscribed upon which was the slogan:
‘The more people I meet, the more I love my Dog’
Given the line of WEB’s work, thats probably just how he feels right now. Maybe he will be quiet for a short while, maybe a little longer. After all he is a human being.
The bridge you refer to is called Rainbow Bridge.
When I lost my first treasured pet I heard about Rainbow Bridge and it helped me tremendously. if you get a chance or know someone grieving over a loved pet I recommend you google it or try http://www.fourpawsinheaven.com.

theres going to be a lot of very pissed off rats, mice, beagles, monkeys, pheasants, deer, rabbits, grouse, foxes, pigs, cows, ducks, pigeons and a variety of other small furry things gunning for me when I croak it!

I suspect that the Indian story is the original inspiration for the Rainbow Bridge.
That’s a beautiful story – you just made another grown man cry.
My dog Ben is 14 and I know we won’t have him for much longer. I hope when I come to the Rainbow Bridge that he’ll have much kindnes to remember.
The worst thing was my mother never used a sentence with the word ‘dog’ without the word ‘bloody’ as in ‘bloody dog hair’ or ‘bloody talks to the dog more than he talks to me’
When I say my parents were broken, they were. Broken. Both of them.
‘Bloody broken’ as me old mum would say.
What do I do………………stitch them up with the old ‘he came into Police kennels and no one wants him’ line.
Thinking of it. You can never replace a loved one.
When I had a second child I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to divide the love I had. My old Mum told me you don’t have to divide it, you multiply it!
Time to do the old ‘ he wasn’t wanted ‘ line methinks.

That reminds me of my Dad on the subject of my Mum’s dog- “That bloody dog…..”. And who is the first out buying “That bloody dog” an new bed & toys.
Hope your parents can find it in their hearts to give another unwanted dog a great home. They are so worth it.
