A splendid time is guaranteed for all
June 29, 2007 by inspectorgadget
Our new boss is Jacqui Smith. The Oxford educated former deputy minister for ‘women and equality’ will bring her considerable experience as a former…. er….. school teacher…. to the Home Office.

Jacquie reads Inspector Gadget every day!
Being as we are already glorified social workers and the police now have ‘customers’, her political background in Trade & Industry and Social Services seems about right to me.

Jacquie tells a school child not to throw cream cakes or risk being criminalised for an easy Detection.
Dodgy mortgages, questionable expense accounts and unfit for purpose departments aside, Ms Smith should last about…. oh…. six months perhaps?
Having said that, “every cloud…” etc - it could have been Hazel!
(By the way - check out the ***NEW*** police blog Area Trace No Search)

woohoo im first! hurrah for night shift and not being able to sleep
so we have a new pm..who we didnt vote in…and a new home secretary…who from what i can gather has little or no qualifications for the job.
anyone recall that when labour first got in they played that song ” things can only get better”….can i ask when?
Can the last person out please turn off the lights.
I’ve just finished nights too…
To be honest, I only know about 4 people in the new Cabinet line up!
Regards
Nick

It didn’t take long for ACPO to sing her praises on their web site - brown nosers!
Chins up, gentlemen; only another two years and then you can vote in… Erm…
Bugger. Where did I put that immigration paperwork?
She will be more than qualified for telling us we are getting shafted at the upcoming pay review and when we object she will just revert to that age old term used by most teachers
MUST DO BETTER!
Never mind lets be positive with Gordon’s mantra, bla bla change, bla bla change, bla bla change. Strange that, as we live in a democratic society and have had a change of Government without any of us mere mortals having our democratic VOTE to change the Government. ‘Things can only get better’ (worse). Better go and find my knee length school trousers for the new headmistress.
Events dear boy ,events ,got one now hasn’t she ? lucky thev’e got that there Peter Clarke to help a bit
Slow down guys. I know you’re probably right, but give the woman a chance.
If she was to read these comments (which I doubt) and thought it was indicative of our opinions of her, she probably wouldn’t like us much either and could shaft us, like the last few Home Secs.
Lets not jump the gun.

It could have been any f***er under the veil, so it should not be worn. The answer is easy, just have women in courtroom, confirm I.D. and then let the lady put her veil back on. Obviously if she leaves the clerks sight, that will have to be done again.
Sorry for hijacking thread, but nowhere else to put it!
Just to say thanks, Guv - I asked for advice and you gave a link, much more than expected.
Next time you’re in London I’ll remortgage and splash you a half.
Lager top alright?
Hurray for Jacqui ,
I see The Times refers to your past experience as being the Chief Whip and not ‘ a pushover ‘ like Harriet Harman. Well we shall see . First day in your new job and we find a car bomb in central london. I can only say welcome Jacqui to the wild and very demanding world of policing. If you thought party infighting was hard think again. I wish you well but like Gadget I am afraid the serious money is on this being a very short tenure. Enjoy it while it lasts.
PS - Best wishes to everyone who finished nightshift this morning ! I hope your week went better than mine. Thanks to Gadget for a great blog. Keep it up ! .
PPS - Please be careful out there . As we all know terrorism does not begin and end in the London . Like PIRA these people will come to understand the advantages of moving the war out from the capital.
Hmmm Jacqui Smith bringing the depth of experience and proven judgement one would expect of a Home Secretary in the Home Office and just to make life complete, that well known legal authority, that scourge of the criminal errrrm Jack Straw at Justice.
Me? I just keep building that windmill until they send me to the glue factory.
Think you’ve missed the key part of her CV - Chief Whip. Expect no mercy Gadget!
I like her with her hair blonder! Ooh, a little frisson there!
G
The people about whom you talk are the very cream of British Society.
They are good, well-meaning and upstanding individuals who are beyond any reproach by any reasonable person in full and proper control of his/her senses and faculties.
How dare you cast any criticism upon their activities (however apparently stupid and/or corrupt)?
They work for the benefit of all, including yourself…
… and: they do their very dangerous and arduous jobs for a mere pittance.
Can you say that about yourself and your job?
Best wishes
Peter
Peter - Err… OK then, thanks for that!
Peter, you said “they do their very dangerous and ardous jobs for a mere pittance” refering to MP’s
What planet are you on? the average wage for a cabinet MP is £113k according to the FT. also, when was the last time an MP was murdered while at work - the IRA Brighton bombing of the Tory conference in 1984?? Please correct me if I’m wrong, but that was 23 years ago?
I’ll agree with ardous though, the MP’s bar in the house of commons is a nightmare to get a drink at the bar after 4pm, too many MP’s in the way. Though I doubt many have had to do 24 hours stints at work more than a couple of times a year, but then I’m just a response plod who does nothing but sit around all day eating donuts and getting paid a fortune for doing so. Apparently.
Whether he was correct or not, I think a little charity will reveal that Peter W was being a little sarcastic!
However, news about the new Home Secretary is fantastic! She went to the same Oxford college as I did, so if what I read about in the press is true, my policing career should be sorted! (Hopefully).
